About GeoRanks

From bartender to programmer, building games that make geography more fun 🌍

Kieron - Creator of GeoRanks

Hi, I'm Kieron

Creator of GeoRanks

At school, I had zero interest in geography, it was taught in a way that made the world feel small, flat, and boring.

That changed when I started working as a bartender onboard Disney Cruise Line.

Traveling to 40+ countries, meeting people from all walks of life, and seeing how different the world really is completely rewired how I saw the planet.

That's where my passion for travel, culture, and geography was born.

Now, after nearly a decade behind the bar, I'm transitioning into a new career as a programmer, building interactive games instead of cocktails.

GeoRanks is the first of many projects I'll be creating — a way to turn the world into something competitive, social, and fun to explore.

What is GeoRanks?

A geography game built around ranking countries

GeoRanks is a geography game where you put countries in order. Instead of memorising capitals or pointing at a map, you compare countries against each other on things like population, land area, GDP per capita, highest altitude, forest coverage, Olympic medals, World Cup trophies and passport power. The aim is to make learning about the world more interactive, and a bit more competitive.

There are three ways to play. In Classic you get ten countries and rank them from highest to lowest. In Top 10 you race a two-minute clock to name the countries at the top of a category. In VS you see two countries and pick which one ranks higher. Every day there is also a Daily Challenge, the same puzzle for every player, with its own leaderboard.

GeoRanks currently offers 36 categories, from the serious (economy, geography, demographics) to the fun (beer consumption, Big Mac prices, sport). Some are free to play and the rest are part of GeoRanks Premium. You can also play head-to-head against other people through Quick Match, or invite a friend directly. The categories and features are still growing as the game evolves, and ideas are always welcome through the contact page.
